☣ the desire to protect

Rather by nature or nurture, Dean believes his job is to protect those around him, and the family motto is 'saving people, hunting things'. Nearly every episode features him trying to save the victims of the week or trying to avert the most recent apocalypse, no matter the cost to himself. A particularly noteworthy example is when he's drugged and given the illusion of his perfect life. Though a large part of him wants to give to the illusion, the image of another victim in his dreams is what ultimately pulls him from the depths of the dream.

As with most principles, this is regularly challenged. Sometimes, it feels as if he may fail and leave the burden behind, but he never does.

☣ loyalty

The most obvious of which is to his family, which he stood by through nearly everything. Despite their upbringing (which many would see as abusive), Dean has only recently started to admit any fault in his father and stood by his brother through nearly everything, even when he wanted to quit it all. When Sam dies, Dean even goes so far as to give his life to bring him back, even knowing Sam wouldn't have wanted him to die.

However, this does extend to others, particular Castiel, who has become a very important person in his life. While in Purgatory, he does his best to help him, even if he thinks he failed.

☣ strength of will

Despite all of the loss Dean suffers, he remains steady on his path. While it would be a lie to say he never falters, no matter how he strays, Dean keeps going strong. Giving up would often mean the loss of life, and it's not something he can accept.

Countless examples are scattered throughout show considering the proof is that he's still fighting. If there is any doubt, he was once subjected to the worse torture in Hell and lasted 40 years before breaking.

☣ funny

There's little way to deny he's the comedy of the show, often even telling jokes in inopportune moments, and while sometimes he's the butt of the joke instead, most of these moments intentional. Dean constantly takes small jabs at his brother and those around him, teasing them and making snide remarks. Some of it is simply his nature, some of it is a protective reflex. Two unconnected by memorable lines are "I'm Batman" and "I think I'm adorable".

☣ self-hatred

Easy to miss behind the smooth, confident persona, Dean Winchester has very, very little worth. Raised to 'always take care of Sammy', he's put his family lives before his own, partially because of the aforementioned loyalty, partially because he sees himself as the one with less worth. Though he's slowly started to accept his value to being equal(ish) to that of Sam, the show has not been kind. In season 2, his father sacrifices his life for Dean's, in Season 4 he returns from Hell only to discover his eventual breaking in Hell caused the apocalypse, he's taken the mark of Cain which turns him into a berserker, and he becomes a demon at one point after yet another death. In the latest season, he agreed to accept an alt-universe Michael into his body, which Michael then kept. He used Dean to hurt people. After the congo line of trauma and 'mistakes', it's hard for Dean to see himself as good.

☣ closed mind

Another trait which has slowly started to disappear, it nonetheless lingers to some degree at this point. Dean was raised to think supernatural=bad, and it's a philosophy he's accepted with few exceptions. This is most evident when dealing with vampires and werewolves, two beings that were once human. Whereas Sam can see the gray areas and feel bad for those transformed, Dean initially can only see what they've become, not who they were or even their unwillingness to kill once they've changed.

As mentioned, Dean is slowing learning to judge less quickly in these encounters and even befriends a vampire in Purgatory, but the instinct still remains.

☣ emotionally closed off

Ho boy. Yes, Dean feels, and the show is well known for man pain and Jensen Ackles' crying. While he technically can, and does, eventually talk about his feelings, it normally only happens after the pressure has built enough to be dangerous. Instead, he likes to throw himself into hunts, drinking, or women, three common escapes that continue to crop up after the most serious of events.

Probably the most notorious example of this is his return from Hell. Lying to Sam and claiming not to remember a thing, he drinks more heavily, focuses hard on hunts, and has frequent nightmares. Another noteworthy example is when Dean finally cracks and beats his beloved Impala with a crowbar after the death of his father.

Again, he's opening up slightly. It still takes some urging, but Dean's faster in being open with his feelings.

☣ Anger/instability

Especially important after his return from Purgatory, Dean has occasions of giving into his bloodthirsty side. While this isn't the hurting of innocence, he takes too much joy in killing his marks and can occasionally be hard to stop until the job is finished. This is because while in Purgatory, he had to constantly fight to survive and was never allowed a moment's reprieve. Such instincts lingered when he returned.

However, this isn't something that is present in everyday situations.

☣ Selfishness

Though seen as selflessness, it's a blurry line. Dean has sacrificed a lot for Sam and John, but aside from love, there's also a fear of living without them. In the second season, Sam is killed, and Dean makes a trade: Sam comes back, Dean dies in a year. This bargain comes soon after John makes a similar deal, and Dean knows how painful it is to live knowing someone you love died for you, and yet he makes it anyway so that Sam can live.

More recently, he allows Sam to get possessed in order to live, knowing that doing so goes against Sam's wishes.

☣ Lying to himself

Dean has an image of what he should be, and he embraces this even when it conflicts with what he wants. Originally, it was his need to sacrifice himself for his family. He's willing to see that burden as unfair now. However, he's still left with the masculine image that he wields like a sword. We've slowly seen cracks in this as well in his relationship with other masculine figures as well as admissions pulled from spells or random, odd scenarios, such as admitting he was once forced to wear a girl's panties, and he kind of liked it. There's still a lot of things Dean isn't willing to admit to himself or others.

Powers and Abilities: hunting has made him skilled in weaponry, both use and mainetence. Dean's fast, strong, and he has a lot of stamina. He's also good at surviving on his own as he can make money in a variety of ways (pool sharking, stealing credit cards, stealing cars, etc) as well as fake identities enough to get answers. Dean's an expert in vehicles as well, though he's also shown technical skills in machinery.

Also, surprisingly, Dean can cook.
